BEAR BRAND HOSIERY

Bear Brand Hosiery Company is a 6-acre site whose operations consisted of textile production and hosiery manufacturing for approximately 35 years. Two obvious potential waste sources on-site included the drums, which have since been removed by U.S. EPA, and the underground storage tank or vault. There are no records of any past incidents or regulatory history at this site. This site was selected among several proposed brownfield sites in Northwest Indiana to be included in the U.S. EPA-funded Brownfields pilot supporting environmental assessments; it was one of the first three selected brownfield sites. This was a truly a cooperative, interagency effort as U.S. EPA sampled the drum contents for identification and subsequent removal.

A Brownfields Environmental Assessment was completed by IDEM in May 1996. IDEM staff conducted the environmental assessment to determine the presence of contamination and help identify if the property would be a suitable candidate for redevelopment into a property more beneficial to the local community. The IDEM Brownfields Environmental Assessment provided a sufficient screening of the property at the time. On-site contaminants detected during the sampling event are below VRP standards and do not appear to be attributable to the site. Also, levels are below standards that would pose a threat of soil exposure to area residents. Based on this assessment, no evidence was found suggesting the necessity for remediation.
