NORTHVILLE REGIONAL PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL |
Once
one of Michigan's largest state psychiatric hospitals, Northville was built in
the 1950s with the capacity to house more than 1,200 people. After the
nationwide deinstitutionalization effort and the move toward community-based
treatment, Northville was closed in 2003
Until now this has been considered Michigan's largest current state hospital
(300 pages). The state government in November 2001 has sold the grounds to a
commercial developer for $62 million. The buildings, dating from the 1950s, are
not considered worth preserving, renovating, or re-using at this time by those
involved.
